چکیده
Last Time: We discussed quadrature rules, which are means of estimating integrals of functions using a weighted sum of function values. Among these, one of the simplest is the trapezoidal rule, which derives its name from the fact that it attempts to approximate the area under the curve using a trapezoid. Although it can be proved the accuracy of this rule increases quadratically with the number of quadrature points, in some cases the accuracy increases exponentially. We showed how this phenomenon can be understood in terms of the Fourier transform, as the accuracy can be related to the rate of decay of the Fourier coefficients of the function. For a smooth and periodic function these decay faster than any polynomial, which in turn explains the spectral accuracy of the trapezoidal rule for this class of functions.

Last Time: We surveyed two techniques for efficiently computing non-uniform discrete Fourier transforms. We considered two distinct tasks: Type I : evaluating the Fourier transform at uniform frequencies from non-uniform data; and Type II : evaluating the transform at non-uniform frequencies from uniform data. Finally, we mentioned that Taylor approximations could be employed to simultaneously ...

Last Time: We proved Weyl-Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, which establishes that a signal cannot be concentrated simultaneously in both the time domain and the frequency domain. Although this is a mathematical statement, it has profound implications in quantum mechanics. In order to understand this connection, we introduced the formalism of quantum mechanics. We defined observables as hermi...
متن کاملA Novel Multi-user Detection Approach on Fluctuations of Autocorrelation Estimators in Non-Cooperative Communication
Recently, blind multi-user detection has become an important topic in code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. Direct-Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) signals are well-known due to their low probability of detection, and secure communication. In this article, the problem of blind multi-user detection is studied in variable processing gain direct-sequence code division multiple access (VPG D...
متن کاملCS168: The Modern Algorithmic Toolbox Lecture #14: Markov Chain Monte Carlo
The previous lecture covered several tools for inferring properties of the distribution that underlies a random sample. In this lecture we will see how to design distributions and sampling schemes that will allow us to solve problems we care about. In some instances, the goal will be to understand an existing random process, and in other instances, the problem we hope to solve has no intrinsic ...
